Jodhpurs and Breeches
Jodhpurs and breeches are an essential part of any rider’s wardrobe, from happy hackers to world class eventers and are now available in a multitude of colours, materials and sizes.
The stretchy, close fit material that they are made from allows a comfortable and safe ride, ensuring that the inner leg is not pinched by the stirrup leathers. Try riding, especially jumping in normal jeans or shorts and you will get the bruises to prove this! Jodhpurs will usually have knee and rear reinforcements. Breeches generally only have the rear but will sometimes have the knee as well - what discipline you compete in can sway your choice. Unlike casual trousers the seams are on the outside of jodhpurs and breeches to prevent rubbing the horse and rider.
Cream or white breeches traditionally dominate the competition scene, as most disciplines have a colour code. Breeches are designed to be worn with long boots as their length of inseam is shorter than that of jodhpurs, usually ending half way down the calf. However, jodphurs are still seen in every day riding and in competitions especially worn by children as they will often wear short jodhpur boots that can be clipped in place with the stirrup on the jodhpurs and clips.
Jodhpurs are available in mostly every colour imaginable and most people for practical reasons will not wear cream or white on an everyday basis, saving them for best. Endurance riders and some cross country riders may wear their team or cross country colours but it is always best to check colour code with the organisers of your particular discipline.
